In John chapter 14 twice Jesus repeated the same phrase in emphasis to His listeners. He said, “Let not your hearts be troubled…” in verse 1 and again repeated Himself in verse 27, but added, “…neither let it be afraid.”
When looking at this, it’s clear that this is a job we are given. We are not to allow our hearts (this speaks of our souls – mind, will, thoughts, emotions) to be riled up with worry, fear, or stress. That’s a nice suggestion, we might think, but how are we supposed to get rid of fear in our lives?
Jesus gave us His answer in John 14:27 when He announced that He was giving us His gift of peace, but once again we must ask, how do we get this peace to remain in constant guard over our active minds? Hebrews 4 describes a gift of rest that the writer insists we must be diligent and even “fear” lest we fall short of accessing this spiritual treasure. (verses 1, 9, 11)
So where do we find this gift of peace and rest?
I believe the answer is found in Heb 4:12 where the sword of peace is permitted to “pierce asunder” dividing between our soul and spirit. Though sounding very much like fileting a fish, piercing actually describes a wonderful birthing process (born again) and asunder is defined as a gift which disunites our emotional soul from our spiritually clear spirit man.
When our eternal spirit man is in the lead, he is able to direct us to the paths of peace and pastures of rest. He can actually bring healing to both our soul and body! Isn’t that wonderful?
Listen to 1 Peter 1:22: “Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the spirit (spirit man) in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart…”
Our soul is purified when we follow the lead of our spirit!
Now 3 John 1:2: “Beloved, I wish above all that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers.”
When our soul is healed by submitting to our spirit, we begin to prosper and be in good physical health as well! Isn’t that an amazing promise?
So how do we invite our spirit man to take the lead? Simply ask the Holy Spirit to “pierce asunder” between your soul and spirit and then ask your soul to step aside and allow your spirit man to take the lead daily. Read blessings of encouragement found in the Word of God and declare them over youself on a regular basis. Your spirit will love it and your soul and body will reap greatly from these blessings!
Be filled with the peace of Jesus today!
